Spring Appeal 2026
Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Community Partners,
For nearly five decades, Samaritan Inn has served Sussex County as a community-based nonprofit providing emergency shelter, a food pantry, and community case management to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or financial hardship. Founded in 1977 by Sister Thomasina Gebhard, our work is guided by the core values of Service, Justice, Competence, and Human Dignity.
Over the past year, Samaritan Inn has responded to new challenges and opportunities to serve our community. In partnership with local agencies, law enforcement, and municipal leaders in Newton, we launched an initiative supporting individuals experiencing long-term chronic homelessness, particularly during the winter months. This effort provides safe housing, crisis intervention, and access to vital case management services.
We have also introduced a program assisting individuals applying for or receiving Medicaid who have additional housing needs. Through the guidance of a Housing Navigator, participants receive support connecting to housing resources and services that help stabilize their lives.
Our Family Shelter Program continues to provide temporary housing for homeless families in 14 fully furnished apartments. By offering a safe and stable environment, parents are able to rebuild their lives while their children remain in school and maintain stability during difficult times. At the same time, our food pantry continues to serve many individuals and families who struggle with food insecurity.
As we move into spring after a difficult winter, Samaritan Inn is exploring the purchase of another house that, after renovation, could provide shelter for as many as three additional families in need.
We once again turn to you for support. Your generosity allows Samaritan Inn to provide shelter, food, and compassionate guidance to families during some of the most challenging moments in their lives. With your partnership, we can continue working toward a community where every family has a safe place to call home and no child has to wonder where they will sleep at night.
Thank you for your continued support of Samaritan Inn and the families we serve.
With gratitude,
The Board of Directors of Samaritan Inn
